The League of Women Voters is a grassroots, nonpartisan, political organization that "has fought since 1920 to improve our systems of government and impact public policies through citizen education and advocacy." Membership in the League of Women Voters is open to all citizens, men and women, 18 years of age or older.
Why should I join?
You will gain knowledge and experience through the study and discussion of timely and important topics. Through participation in local League projects, you will contribute valuable service to the community. You will discover new interests, develop new skills and learn about crucial issues in Alabama. As you meet others in League who share your interests, you will make professional contacts and develop lasting friendships.
How much time does it take?
It's up to you! Many members choose to support the League only with their annual dues. Your membership alone gives us the political influence needed to build a voice for citizens and a force for change. We cover a broad spectrum of issues and concerns; you may choose to become involved in one or more of them by actively participating in a group study, participating in online discussions, or reading about them in one of our publications.
What do I get?
In addition to your membership in the League of Women Voters of Alabama (LWVAL), you automatically become a member of the League of Women Voters of the United States. You will also receive the LWVAL Voter (newsletter of the LWVAL) which is usually published 4 times each year. You will have the knowledge that you are adding your voice to a powerful force of members from all 50 states, Washington DC, the Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.
How much does it cost to be a member?
Dues are...       $40 Individual Membership       $60 Family Membership (2 in same household)       $20 Student Membership (enrolled in college or unviersity)
Can I join a local League?
Yes. The local Leagues in Alabama are: Baldwin County, Greater Birmingham (Jefferson & Shelby Counties), East Alabama (Lee & Russell Counties), Mobile, Montgomery, and Greater Tuscaloosa. If you live in or near one of these areas, contact a local League about local League membership. Membership at the local level includes membership in the state and national Leagues with the benefits of those memberships. Also, local League members meet periodically to address community issues through advocacy and education.
How do I join LWVAL?
It's easy! 1. Fill out a membership form either online or print one out and mail it in. You will join as a Member-at-Large 2. Pay your dues. Mail in your check along with your membership form.
