Voting Access and Process, including Election Reform and Redistricting

thumbs_down_icon.jpgHB16 - Municipal elections, require voters to register in same time frame as registering for county or state election, Sec. 11-46-38 am'd.

Sponsor(s):  Representative Jim Hill

Synopsis and Analysis:  Under existing law, a board of registrars is  prohibited from registering an individual as a qualified elector within 10 days of a municipal  election. This bill would provide that an individual must register to vote for a municipal election  within the same time frame as provided for county and state elections,14 days.

League Action and Justification: Oppose.  Although the  bill would make the voter registration period uniform for state, county and municipal elections,  the bill results in reducing the potential time to register to vote allowed for a municipal election.  The League opposes any undue restrictions on voter registration.
