SB 20 - Class action lawsuits filed in Alabama, plan for undistributed funds to be distributed to Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Department if class members cannot be located, or if distribution to class is not economically feasible, or if class members do not make a claim to the class funds
Sponsor(s): Sen. Larry MeansSummary/Synopsis: As would SB 21, this bill would provide funding for social services, specifically the protection of children. It requires that undistributed settlement funds from class action lawsuits go to a fund for the Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Department.
This bill would provide that all settlements or orders entering judgment in a class action lawsuit filed in Alabama and governed by Alabama law that results in the creation of a common fund for the benefit of a class shall establish a plan for determining the distribution of the residual remaining funds and the timing of such distribution to the Department of Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention.

It would also provide for an additional $5 fee to file for divorce, with the money to support a fund for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA).
