As is often the case, April through June will be busy months for many people. The League calendar is full also with end-of-the-year meetings. This issue contains all of the information you will want to consider before you come to the Annual Business Meeting. The bylaws require that you receive reports from the Nominating, Bylaws, Budget, and Program Committees one month in advance of the meeting.
On May 15th the LWVAL will hold it’s one-day state council in Tuscaloosa. Any and all members are welcome to attend. Kay Ivey, State Treasurer, will speak at the luncheon. Four workshops will be conducted in the afternoon. Please contact me or any board member if you are interested in attending.
In June the national convention will be held in Washington, D.C. This is an excellent experience for new and long-time members. Combine it with a vacation trip to Washington with your family or just use it for a grownup getaway. Information about this meeting is on the LWVUS website. You can also contact me for details.
So you can see that opportunities for involvement range from several hours (Annual Meeting at the Art Museum, through a day in Tuscaloosa (State Council) to several days in Washington (National Convention.)

Program Recommendations
The board recommends the re-adoption of all current program.
It further recommends the adoption of a study of Health Care for the uninsured and underinsured in Jefferson County. The study should focus on true access, especially as it applies to preventive care and follow-up for chronic situations. Acute care may be considered at a future date. Follow-up forums dealing with the issue of resources may be included.

Recommended Bylaws Revisions
Article IV
Board of Directors
Sec. 1. Number, Manner of Selection and Terms of Office
- Line 4: remove the “and qualified” so the line reads “years, or until their successors have been qualified and elected”… Additionally do we need to add in line five “of the board” after elected members so it reads “elected members of the board shall appoint such additional directors”…?
- Do we need a clarification that the co-director does or does not count in the total of 6 appointed directors?
Article VII
Meetings
Sec. 3. Quorum
Do we need to insert the words “annual business or general” in front of meetings and/or insert the words “of the membership of” after the word meetings? That would result in the first line reading, “Fifteen percent of the voting members shall constitute a quorum at all annual business or general meetings of the membership of the League of…”
Article VIII
Nominations and Elections
Sec. 1. Nominating Committee
Change the paragraph to read:
The nominating committee shall consist of at least three members. The chairperson and one member, who shall not be members of the Board of Directors, shall be elected at the annual business meeting. Nominations for these positions shall be made by the current nominating committee. At least one other member shall be appointed by the Board of Directors immediately following the annual business meeting. The nominations committee may consist of more than three members as long as the ratio of appointed to elected not exceed 2:3. Any vacancy in the nominating committee shall be filled by a member appointed by the Board of Directors. Suggestions for nominating for officers and directors may be sent to this committee by any voting member.
Delete the words “and nominating committee members so the sentence reads “ “The chairperson shall attend at least one Board meeting.”
Article XII
Sec. 1. The Bylaws Committee
Do we need to change the size of the bylaws committee? It says three members???
