Editor's Preface

Members, Friends, Allies - this is the moment where the proverbial rubber hits the road for all of us.  We are slightly over 30 days out from the 2024 general election. It is 'show time' and the director has called 'places'.

I made a personal Facebook post last week about the state purging voters and the need for everyone to check their registration status.  A friend messaged back - she had used my link to check her mother and found her NOT on the voter list.  She was horrified because this 92 year old had voted in every election for decades.  I communicated to my friend how to correct the situation. She was grateful. And I was glad I took the very small step to share with friends that people needed to check their voter status.

We ALL, at a minimum, need to be encouraging every human we know to check their voter status - and to have a plan to vote.

Important Volunteer Opportunity with LWV Partner
Poor People's Campaign
Since the launch of of their National GOTV program, the Poor People's Campaign (PPC) has coordinated two national canvass weekends in 25+ states, putting tens of thousands of pieces of important voting resources in the hands of poor and low-wage, infrequent voters. They will be continuing this critical work by reaching millions more poor and low-wage voters through their national texting program.

From now thru November, the Poor People's Campaign will use a peer-to-peer textbanking platform to reach millions of poor and low-wage, infrequent voters across the country.

Join the PPC Thursday October 10 at 7 pm CT for the launch of their volunteer led National Textbank Program.  Participants will hear from the Campaign Co-Chairs about the political moment we are in, be trained on the texting technology, and then start texting!

Senate Bill 1 (SB1) Update

On Tuesday September 24, Chief U.S. District Judge David Proctor granted a preliminary injunction which prohibits the State, for now, from enforcing the part of the the SB1 law that relates to assisting people covered by the Section 208 of the Voting Rights Act with absentee ballot applications.

The injunction states the law's ban on submission as well as gifts and payments for help with an absentee ballot application "are not enforceable as to blind, disabled, or illiterate voters."  Proctor wrote, "The court easily concludes, after reviewing its language, that SB 1 unduly burdens the rights of Section 208 voters to make a choice about who may assist them in obtaining and returning an absentee ballot."

LWVAL President Kathy Jones said, "this is great news for volunteers who can now assist disabled, blind, or low literacy registered voters who ask for assistance to apply for an absentee ballot for the in the November general election."  She added, "importantly this applies to these Section 208 (disabled, blind and low literacy) voters only."

Wake Up Everybody!
"I know we can do it
If we all lend a hand
The only thing we have to do
Is put it in our minds"

Performed by John Legend, The Roots, Melanie Fiona and Common
“Wake Up Everybody” is the title track from American R&B group Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes album Wake Up Everybody, released in November of 1975. The song was written by John Whitehead, Gene McFadden and Victor Carstarphen.
No this isn't a Halloween celebration but it IS witches!  Traditionally speaking, the Walpurgis Night celebration is a night to pay tribute to the 8th century Saint Walpurga. Walpurga, was an English-born nun who travelled to Germany to perform missionary work under her uncle, Saint Boniface. She has been praised by Christians for successfully warding off pests, illness and witchcraft.  Germans celebrate this holiday as a second Halloween.  The song they are dancing to has nothing to do with witches or Wapurgis Night.  A polite translation of the song title from German would be 'shake your bootie' by a German rock band.  Wouldn't it be fun to get a group together, dress up and perform this dance?!  I think so.
