Synopsis and Analysis:  Under existing law, the state imposes sales or use taxes upon certain persons, firms, or corporations. Sales of certain items are taxed at a reduced rate. Sales of other items are exempt from the taxes. This bill would exempt sales of food from the sales and use taxes beginning September 1, 2019.

This bill would remove the state portion of sales and use taxes on food.  The local portion of these taxes would remain.

League Action and Justification: Support. The league favors tax reform to lighten the tax burden on low income citizens.  The league supported the removal of taxes on food as a way to do this. Alabama is one of three states that tax food.
